TY - THES T1 - The influence of implicit motives on the expression and perception of facial expressions of emotion. A1 - Rösch,Andreas G. Y1 - 2012/07/25 N2 - The thesis demonstrates that implicit motives systematically influence the expression and perception of facial expressions of emotion (FEEs), according to the predictions of the Motivational Field Theory (Stanton, Hall, & Schultheiss, 2010). In a lens model framework the thesis firstly demonstrates that implicit motives of senders of FEEs influence both, objectively measured (muscular activations in the face, assessed with the Facial Action Coding System; Ekman, Friesen, & Hager, 2002) as well as subjectively perceived (emotional intensity; interpersonal meaning) characteristics of FEEs. Secondly the thesis demonstrates that implicit motives of perceivers of FEEs influence perceivers? ratings of valence and arousal of FEEs. Thirdly, it introduces and comprehensively evaluates a newly created stimulus pool of FEEs, called the SMoFEE stimulus set (Standardized and Motivated Facial Expressions of Emotion). Finally, the thesis integrates these results in a comprehensive model of interactions between implicit motivational and emotional processes.
